In this essay I will discuss how he does this. Dickens begins to create suspense right at the start of the story by writing it in the first person narrative. Thus the readers are more receptive to the idea of a ghost story than perhaps we are today. Dickens sets this story mainly at night; this provides more atmospheric tension and we could perceive more strange things happening in the story. Setting the story at night creates a more gloomy setting for the story, nothing is seen very clearly and it all relates back to the supernatural thoughts of the 19th century. When the narrator shouts Halloa, below there, we expect the signalman to look up and respond, but instead he looks towards the warning light at the mouth of the tunnel. This leaves us wondering why he does this and what will happen next, is someone coming up the tunnel maybe? When they are having the conversation in the signal box, the signalman looks towards the bell, but it doesnt ring and we wonder what he hears or sees and then when he gets up to look outside, we wonder what Is going on. Another example is when the signalman asks the narrator not to call out the words Halloa, below there, this makes us think that the signalman doesnt like these words and something has happened in the past that has included these words. The signalman finally tells the narrator what is making him nervous. There is a spectre haunting him at the entrance of the tunnel under the warning light. He says the spectre waves one arm frantically and uses the other to shield its face. One time after the spectre had appeared the memorable accident happened on the line. A train collided with another inside the tunnel and literally hours after the crash, the bodies of the dead and injured were being brought over the same spot on which the spectre stood, this leaves us asking the question, did the spectre cause the crash, or was it warning the signalman that the crash was going to happen? The next time the spectre appeared there was another accident. As the train came out of the tunnel a newly wed woman died in one of the carriages. We need to ask ourselves did the spectre cause the crash or was he merely warning us? Dickens uses different adjectives and verbs to make different parts of the story more effective and atmospheric. One example of this is when the train is coming through the tunnel. Vague vibration in the earth and air and quickly changing into a violent pulsation. The reader doesnt know what is happening at this point, the phrase vague vibration suggests that the object is coming from a long way away. The setting is a very important part of the story. There is the warning light, entrance to the tunnel and the signal box. Dickens uses very descriptive language to describe the valley, which makes the image we get of the railway valley, a creepy and dark one. He describes the setting as extremely deep and usually precipitous, a great dungeon, and a great place for supernatural happenings with a barbarous and forbidding air, these words say that the setting is dark and mysterious and not a nice place to be. The valley is like a dungeon. The signalman is shut up in it all day and all night and he never ventures out to see the sunlight of day. There are many unanswered questions in the story. We do not know why the signalman asks the narrator not to recall the words Halloa, below there? We do not know why the narrator cannot call down to the signalman from the top of the bank. Another question that is not answered is was the signalmans death fate or suicide? We are left to think about this question at the end because it doesnt say anything about it in the story. When we get to part in the story when a character is asked a question that he doesnt like or sees something that scares them, they go very quiet and quickly change the subject. Dickens doesnt make then sound scared or make them look scared just make them feel it inside so it doesnt seem strange to the other character. This can seem strange in some parts but it is used to show that the characters do not want to share their fear, but in most cases we get to find out what is scaring them. At the end of the story, we find out that the signalman is killed. The narrator is not there to witness the killing but he sees some men doing an action near to the mouth of the tunnel. They are doing exactly what the spectre was said to do before the memorable accidents happened. They say that the signalman didnt hear the train coming or the whistle blowing so maybe the signalman didnt want to live because of the spectre haunting him or maybe he thought it was fate that he was going to die. In this essay I have stated many different ways in which Charles Dickens has created suspense and fear in The Signalman. These ways are When the story was written and how people used to believe in supernatural happenings, how most of the story is set at night, to give the story a spooky atmosphere, the way Dickens uses descriptive adjectives and verbs to describe happenings and the setting in the story, the setting and how it is the perfect place for spooky goings on, how the story is full of unanswered questions that keep us thinking throughout the story, how the actions of the characters and how they express fear and emotions in the story and how the end of the story adds a whole new twist to the story. But these methods could only be used for communicating in code with pre-established sayings rather than out-right communication. These methods also required certain meteorological or geographical conditions in order to function properly. In the nineteenth century conditions were present that made the need for new forms of communications indispensable. Industrial society needed a method of communicating information quickly, safely and accurately. Artist-inventor Samuel F.B. Morse holds credit for devising American's first commercially successful electromagnetic telegraph (patented in January 1836). The telegraph was a device used to electrically send signals over a wire for long distances allowing an established communication link to be made from one city to another. (And everything in-between.) The basic principle of the telegraph was the opening and closing of an electrical circuit supplied by a battery: the variations of the current in the electromagnet would attract or repel a small arm connected to a pencil which would trace zigzag signs onto a strip of paper running under the arm at a constant speed. This early plan didn't offer great practical possibilities, mainly because the batteries then available could not produce a current strong enough to push the signal great distances. As an artist and sculptor, Morse had the personal qualities to succeed as inventor of the telegraph: intelligence, persistence, and a willingness to learn. The Darkness in Heart of Darkness      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It can be said that a certain degree of darkness lies within every person, but this darkness will not surface unless given the correct environment.   The darkness, however, can emerge and ultimately destroy the person if not checked by reason.   If one's inner darkness does surface, the victim then is given the opportunity to reach a point in personal growth, and to gain a sense of self- knowledge from it.   That is, when one's darkness appears, one must learn from this experience how he or she can prevent similar results from occurring in the future.   It is ultimately through self-knowledge that we gain the power to defeat our inner darkness, and all of its elements.   Just as everyone has the potential for evil within themselves, we too have the potential for true goodness.   In many literary works the author attempts to exemplify the evil which lies within by showing many characters which have been, or are being overcome by their inner darkness.   In the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad we see how Marlow's journey into his ultimate evil, into his inner self, can be a positive experience.   By contrasting Marlow with Kurtz, who represents the absolute evil, we can see the two products of an inner evil which has emerged.   Marlow, who defeats his evil, and gains self-knowledge, and Kurtz, who is defeated by his darkness and falls prey to its wrath.   In William Golding's Lord of the Flies the author points out how easily people can be over taken by the darkness, how the potential for good can be destroyed by the evil, but ideally how good will triumph.   Through an examination of these two works we can see how the darkness within, given the correct environment will surface.   The circumstances which eventually cause the appearance of the inner darkness in these two novels stems from the lack of civility, the true test, or journey which every life contains, and finally the product of evil which lies in all of us, either through acts of commission or omission.         Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When people lack the aspect of civility in their lives they too will lack the restraints and barriers it has on one's inner evil.

Will gets caught up in the romance having finally found his muse and boasts to Viola â€Å"For one kiss, I would defy a thousand Wessexes! † As a twenty-first century teenager the concept of a class-system preventing two lovers from being together seemed foreign to me as although today’s society is not perfect there is no hierarchy preventing young couples from being together. However I admired and appreciated the two protagonists for going against the aws of society and seeing each other in secret struggling to convince themselves that â€Å"love knows nothing of rank or riverbank. † Throughout the film the viewer is constantly reminded of the difference between Will and Viola’s respective positions in the hierarchy of the age and however strong it may be their love is not one that will last the expectations and realities of Elizabethan England. Madden engrains this into the viewer through mis-en-scene and ca mera shots. Viola’s stately home is an immediate indicator that she will serve as a foil to Will.Despite their shared passion for the arts almost everything else about Will and Viola differs. When the viewer is introduced to Will Shakespeare he does not live up to the expectations viewers of today have based on the playwright he will become. Will currently lives in what appears to be a run-down, dirty London boarding house. His room is compact and the walls stained and bare. It is void of furniture save a small writing desk, table and stool. His bed is in a small loft atop a ladder and we viewers are reminded, â€Å"actors are two-a-penny† a strange contrast to today’s idolism of all those to grace the silver screen.Viola’s mansion completely differs to Will’s world, the sheer size of the grounds and the long driveway are symbols of her wealth. Viola’s bedroom is furnished with detailed tapestries, carved wooden furniture and a giant four-po ster bed all illuminated by a gentle golden glow heightening the sense of her regality. Viola’s world continues to contrast to Will’s as she has a place at court and therefore is invited to festivities at places such as Greenwich and Whitehall, vast palaces with luxuries such as theatres, audience chambers and ballrooms. Will’s entertainment is in the crowded, dark taverns with cheap food, drink and love.Madden also enhances the separation between the two lovers through use of camera shots and angles. As Viola is the social superior she is shown to be at a higher level than Will through use of low angle shots illustrating to the viewer how she is too above Will for their relationship to work. This is seen especially in the balcony scenes shared between Will and Viola in reality and as Romeo and Juliet in the opening performance of the play. She is always above him and this is reciprocated through high angle shots of Will as he is near the bottom of the Elizabeth an hierarchy.This shows that although it is in Will and Viola’s nature to fall in love the truths of the era separates them making it impossible for a highborn lady like Viola to â€Å"love happily with a bankside poet and player. † Shakespeare in Love won an academy award for its use of costuming in the film, which is apparent when we see Viola throughout the film. She is dressed immaculately in elaborate gowns with intricate beading often shown in regal colours such as red, silver and gold which highlights her wealth and status and reminds the viewer that she is too above Will for their relationship to be acceptable in Elizabethan society.This is contrasted when we first see Will, he is clearly one of the masses in his worn workman boots, plain white shirt and ink stained hands. He relies on his words for a living. Viola and Will are from separate worlds and are only equals in the opening performance of Romeo and Juliet where Will is dressed in equal amounts of finer y as Viola. This shows that only in the make-believe world of the theatre can these two be equal and accepted. The idea that they cannot marry each other even though they are in love is hard to grasp in the modern day and is the reason why many were unsatisfied by the ending of the film.However it was interesting to see how â€Å"love can spring between a queen and the poor vagabond who plays the king. † We see Will and Viola defy â€Å"rank and riverbank† in an awe-inspiring way but we learn that despite their risk taking, there is not always a happy ending. So it can be seen that the truth of love in Elizabethan England separates the two protagonists who are without control over their own relationships and life choices, a reality for the time that is hardly seen in twenty-first century New Zealand making this theme in the film almost alien to a modern teenage girl like myself.John Madden successfully portrays the constrictions of Elizabethan England and the trials Wi ll and Viola must undergo to be together through his use of dialogue, mis-en-scene, camera shots and costuming. It was interesting to me as a modern day teenager to learn that we don’t always get a happy ending in life. â€Å"Those whom God has joined in marriage not even the Queen can put asunder. †
